ABANDONED AND ORPHANED DOGS AND CATS

Organized by LARRY BARTLETT

Our Story
We live out in the country east of Nashville, Tn. area. We seem to be in a haven for animal abandonment and mistreatment. We don't go out looking for 'strays', they just seem to find us. Over the past six years we have probably adopted out somewhere around 400 animals. All have been to good homes and we do not charge and/or ask for donations, even though we always have the animals spayed, nuetered and given their necessary shots. You would not believe the condition these animals are in when we first get them. My wife, Penny, is unbelievable when it comes to nurturing these very sick and broken animals back to good health. One example, a miniture Schnauzer named Trixie was brought to us with a dislocated hip. The hip could not be put back in place, so an artificial hip was necessary ($1500). Then we discovered her teeth were bad, and all but four were removed ($185). Apparently, she was always fed soft canned dog food. Never do this, only dry food, with the first ingrediant being a meat product. No Ol' Roy junk! Trixie was about 10 years old when we received her and seemed to be loosing weight. The doctor informed us she had a failed kidney and gave her about six weeks to live. We discovered that by giving her a saline solution, once then twice a day by needle, that we could hopefully extend her life. That worked and she lived for over a year longer. During this time, she became our personal inside dog. I have never seen a dog more loving and full of life. My wife adored her. she took her to work most days and went on some very long trips with her. They were true pals!
This past christmas, while we were visiting our children in Dallas, Tx., Trixie started failing quickly and we had to put her down, while Penny was holding her in her lap. It was a very sad time, and Penny is still dealing with her loss. We have Trixie buried in our yard with a monument, for we never want to forget her. TRIXIE, A GREAT DOG!
We are asking for contributors to help us take care of more animals like Trixie. We are both on social security and a little extra part time income, but vet bills are about as high as doctor bills. It is very expensive. We are also raising our 13 year old grandson, and that is an additional expense we had not planned on. Any funds contributed will be put in a special animal fund and used only for the benefit of the animals. I would also like to build several 'insulated' dog houses. It gets pretty cold her in the winter, and this would help keep them warm. We currently have four cats and five dogs. We know we can not adopt out any of these animals, except for "Pinky", a wonderful young pyrenees/bull terrier mix, brindle in color. I am sure soon, we will have another dog or cat to find a good home for.
Your generosity will be greatly appreciated.
In memory of all our animals,
Larry & Penny Bartlett
